[Music] Ventilate

Well, it’s been a fair while since I last uploaded a piece of music — over two months, in fact! So here’s my latest piece.

This piece actually started out as an experiment — I recently got my hands on all sorts of shiny new toys, and my DAW got an awesome upgrade, so I couldn’t resist seeing what I could do with them.

I managed to use all but one of the products that came with Komplete to make this track — FM8, Massive, Reaktor, Guitar Rig, Kontakt, and Battery. Much fun. 😀

Hmm… For some reason, the version of this uploaded to thesixtyone gets some distortion on the bass during the intro section. I’ve tried uploading at various bitrates, multiple times, but it still keeps on happening. I think they must be doing some re-encoding. :/ Very annoying.

I definitely encourage you to explore the song further. I can’t remember which similarly-scripted song made me think of this earlier, but I believe something a little faint, high-pitched, with relatively sporadic notes in a much longer pattern than what’s already here would add a lot of breadth–somewhat reminiscent of Mozart. A flute or fife would fit nicely, I think–or a more percussive melody-appropriate instrument, but with more metallic tone than a piano (again, I’m thinking of something in particular, but the name eludes me).

Anyway, I’d love to hear what might evolve from this if you develop it further, and I’m sorry if I sound impertinent. I’m actually very impressed to find a fellow honors CS student who also has a passion for real music. It’s a very rare combination, though I don’t really understand why.

@HonoredMule: First up, thanks for taking the effort to come over from t61 and comment at length here. 🙂

I find your ‘Mozart’ idea very interesting — thinking it over, I can understand what you’re getting at, notwithstanding the (obviously) large difference in styles. If you do manage to recall the name of the actual instrument you were thinking of, please do let me know. Oh, and you don’t sound impertinent — quite the contrary. One of the things I most love about putting my music out on the internet is that I sometimes get really good feedback and criticism from a fresh audience. 🙂

Regarding CS & music… well, I haven’t found a great many people here in Australia who combine both, but the ‘demoscene’ is full of people like that. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with it — basically, it’s where trackers arose. 🙂 I can give you a few links if you’re interested.

Again, thanks for taking the time and effort to put your thoughts about ‘Ventilate’ down — I really, really appreciate it. 🙂
